Torrevieja is an extremely popular destination with tourists for a number of reasons, including the perfect climate, beautiful beach and convenient location between two airports. It is the largest beach resort on the southern part of the Costa Blanca, and is home to many expatriates from all over the world.

The name Torrevieja means “Old Tower” and this refers to an ancient guard tower that was originally the only element of the city. A village developed around the tower when Charles IV deemed that the salt production offices should be moved from nearby Torre de la Mata and authorised that dwellings be built for workers.

Torrevieja is probably best known for its resplendent promenade, busy marina and long sandy beach. The beach has all the amenities you could possibly want, including water sports, volleyball nets, and play areas for children and toilet facilities. There are even mobile masseurs who tour the sands during the hot summer months providing a relaxing massage to sunbathers.

Along the promenade you will find plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants. Just like in most Spanish towns, the restaurants are mostly child friendly, and it is possible to sit and enjoy adult refreshments while your children play in the nearby areas provided for them.

Torrevieja has some excellent shops ranging from designer stores down to discount outlets where you can pick up bargains. Every Friday there is an incredible market held near the port with over 1200 stalls. Here you will find local produce, leather goods, ceramics, and also fine lace items that are locally crafted.

A great day out for children can be had at Aquopolis, Torrevieja’s water park. Torrevieja is within easy distance of Benidorm which is about 40 minutes away; there you will find a further four major theme parks, including the zoo park of Mundomar.

Natural beauty abounds in Torrevieja and the surrounding areas, and if you move here you are likely to spend a lot of times outdoors, as you can enjoy hiking, rock climbing or cycling. You also have the choice of several world-class golf courses which can easily be reached by car.

For the younger generation there are plenty of nightlife and clubs that cater to all tastes, and also offer work opportunities for the summer. As a holiday resort, the town has an extensive choice of restaurants and bars. You will find plenty of local bars if you prefer a traditional Spanish atmosphere, or there are those run by expats which typically have bingo and karaoke nights, large TV screen sports and imported British food and beer.
