Mores and Christians Fiestas in Alcoy

Posted by syameses on 18 Apr 2007 | Tagged as: entertainment, festival, curiosities

Ready for a new fiesta? I’m, ready, set, there I go and I have a date in Alcoy with the Mores and Christians that during the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of April will be prepared to awe us.  It is here where we wil lsee white flags witht he cross of San Jorge and on the other side green ones with the half moon of Islam, together thousands of flags that unite in procession.

These fiestas are one of my favoites because you could truly feel the passion of a timepassed by. The baroque music that could be heard through the streets, the drums and trumpets that sound of in a hypnotic anthem are incredible. A date that is not to be missed.

Five centuries on history will follow you if you decide to walk towards Santa Faz tomorrow. Just eight kilometres separate the cathedral of San Nicolás in Alicante to the monastery that holds the relics of Santa Faz.

It is tradition to walk this path the second Thursday alter Holy Week, a walk that will inspire you and convert part of you in to its history. Very early in the morning before the sun has even had a chance to wake up the pilgrims accompanied by their Romero canes are ready to celebrate this great fiesta.

There are usually around 300,000 people who take on this adventure that ends in the inside of the Santa Faz, where you can relax, meditate and celebrate before the long walk back home.

Well, it wasn’t this past weekend as I had predicted but at last the sun accompanies us again in the Costa Blanca and its about time. After so many long days of darkness and boredom we could go out and smile again.

All the activities of the area are ready to receive our presence so this weekend, off to the beach we go. Benidorm is the ideal place to spend the weekend relaxing in a hotel with the kids enjoying all the activities that we were not able to enjoy because of the bad weather.

I don´t think I could wait until then, today I will take a walk by the shore and enjoy the long awaited sunshine.

Fonts De Algar, a spring day trip

Posted by syameses on 11 Apr 2007 | Tagged as: tours

I think the weather is finally going to change, after all these days of rain and cold we will finally be able to experience spring. After so many days stuck at home we need a little getaway and one of the most beautiful places around the Costa Blanca for me are the Font de Algar.

High behind the Altea mountains sits this beautiful place with spectacular waterfall and cascades that will leave you breathless. You can swim in the natural pools that surround this tropical paradise. You can also visit the environmental museum and eat in a restaurant that offers sights and sounds that are like nothing you have ever experienced.

The Marq presents its newest exhibition of Asirian culture

Posted by syameses on 03 Apr 2007 | Tagged as: museums, alicante

Thanks to the British Museum we will be able to experience the exhibition of more than 200 pieces and objects of the Asirian culture until the 30th of September in our very own Archeological Museum of Alicante (Marq).

The Asirian culture (presently Irak) leaves us traces of artesian pieces, palaces and temples which form this wonderful exhibition. It is an honor and privilege to have these antiques in our city and I highly recommend a visit to the museum so you can view all the magic this art collection has in store.

Benidorm receives an award for its environmental campaigns

Posted by syameses on 02 Apr 2007 | Tagged as: curiosities, benidorm

Benidorm was named the most sustainable city of last year for its environmental efforts. This titled is awarded to those provinces that during last year made a conscious effort to help the environment. An example of their efforts is  the water saving campaign which entails the distribution of pamphlets and water bags to be placed in cisterns of homes which helps minimize water waste. it is estimated that this simple plan could help save more than 4,000 liters of water per home.

This award is an honor for the city of Benidorm and shows that anyone could help conserve their own county and planet assuring our future and our kids future.
